The incidents occurred at around 1:06 A.M. on Monday morning when Officers responded to a shots fired call in Urbandale at 70th & Aurora.. Preliminary briefings state that an officer was found dead in his patrol vehicle.
Officers were advised of the situation and flooded the area. Approximately 20 minutes later and about 2 miles away a Des Moines Officer was found in his vehicle at the intersection of Merle Hay & Sheridan shot as well. That officer died shortly after being transported to a local area hospital.
Both shootings were characterized as “ambush style” attacks. Neither Officer was named however the suspect has been identified in both shootings as Scott Michael Greene, 46, of Urbandale. He is considered a “clear and present danger to police officers.”
A man hunt is currently underway for Greene at this time.
Police described Greene as a white male, 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He was driving a blue 2011 Ford F-150.
Sgt. Paul Parizek, a Des Moines police spokesman, said there did “not appear that there was any interaction between these officers and the coward who shot them.”
“There is clearly a danger if you’re a police officer. These officers were gunned down sitting in their car doing nothing wrong, so there’s definitely some danger out there. There’s somebody out there shooting police officers. We hope we find him before anyone else gets hurt. We definitely don’t want anyone in the public or the community to get hurt. But there is a clear and present danger to police officers right now,” said Parizek.
It is not clear how Officers became aware of Greens identity however officers from Urbandale are equipped with body cameras.
