Update – Detroit, MI. Sgt. who was shot has died as he prepared to leave hospital

Detroit Police Sgt. Kenneth Steil was shot in the shoulder Monday, Sept. 12, 2016 in an incident at a Sunoco gas station on 7 Mile Road and Hayes Street has died as a result of his injuries.

It is with a very heavy heart that we report Sgt. Kenneth Steil of the Detroit Police Department has perished as a result of his injuries he sustained on September 12, 2016 while attempting to apprehend a suspect.

Sgt. Steil was preparing to leave the hospital and was expected to return home; his 5-year-old son made a welcome-home sign and hung it outside their family home in anticipation of his father’s return from the hospital Saturday. Yet Sgt. Steil would never see the sign.

The officer collapsed and suffered a not-yet-determined medical issue as medical personnel were preparing to discharge him from the medical facility.

The Sgt. Leaves behind a wife and two sons aged 5 and 3.
