Rutherford Co. N.C. deputy shot, suspect shot and killed on scene

A Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been shot, according to Sheriff Chris Francis.

Rutherford County Sheriff Deputies along with Spindale Police and North Carolina Highway Patrol assisted Rutherfordton Police Department officers at 7:53 am, on Saturday, September 17, 2016, in reference to a possibly suicidal person with a gun at 166 Monfredo St. The person was a resident of that address.

Ultimately the resident fired his weapon, and Rutherfordton Police Officers and Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputies returned fire. The resident was struck by gunfire and is deceased at the scene

During the exchange of gunfire, Rutherford County Detective Patrick Wiseman, was struck by gunfire. Detective Wiseman was transported to a local trauma center with non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition

At this time we ask for prayers for Detective Wiseman, all officers involved at the scene and the family of the deceased

The crime scene and investigation of this incident has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and more information will be made available at a later time

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Wildlife officers for their assistance.
