Merced County, Ca. Deputy shot after responding to a domestic abuse call in Delhi

Sheriff Warnke said his deputy, Alejandro “Alex” Barba, is a lucky man. Barba was shot in the leg and abdomen Thursday after responding to a domestic abuse call.

DELHI, Calif.  A deputy was wounded and a suspect was killed in a shootout Thursday evening at a Delhi home, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department said.

Investigators say deputies were called to a home in the 16200 block of Harmony Ranch Drive just before 6 p.m. for a reported domestic disturbance. A family member called 911 to report a physical fight between a couple inside the home.

When they  arrived at the home, Jose Torres, 38 — who was armed with a gun — confronted them, Sgt. Delrey Shelton said.

Barba, a 16-year veteran the department, was struck twice just moments after he stepped out of his patrol car. His partner, Leuchner, returned fire killing the 38-year-old gunman.

Torres’ family was home during the shooting.

Investigators say Torres has been in trouble with the law before. Livingston Police Officers and sheriff’s deputies have been called on reports of child neglect, domestic battery and drugs.

As for Barba, he was flown to a Modesto hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

“He currently is in stable condition and expected to have a full recovery which we’re ecstatic about,” Sergeant Delray Shelton, with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said. “Sheriff’s administration has deemed resources for all involved parties to kind of help get through this tragic time.”

“They responded professionally and according to their training,” Warnke said. “I have no doubt that action taken by Deputy Leuchner saved the life of Deputy Barba.” Sheriff Vern Warnke saidmhe was relieved by news of his deputy’s condition.
