Eastman, Ga. Police Officer shot and killed, suspect being sought

An Eastman, Ga. Police officer was shot and killed while responding to a suspicious person call.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate the shooting death of Eastman, Ga. Police Officer Tim Smith, age 31 who was the father of 2 children according to one news source.

Smith had apparently responded to a call that had been placed to Dodge County 911 dispatch regarding a suspicious person at 9:30 P.M. on Saturday evening.

When Officer Smith arrived in the area of Main Street he exited his patrol car to investigate and was shot by the individual.  Officer Smith returned gunfire and the individual fled the scene.

Officer Smith was transported to an area hospital where he died.  Agents and police are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the shooter.

Eastman, home to about 5,500 people, is about 55 miles southeast of Macon.
