Carbondale, Il. 3 suspects arrested in connection with officer shot, investigation continues

3 men were arrested this past week in Saline County, Kansas in connection with the shooting of a Carbondale, Il. Police Officer on July 31.

Saline County, Kansas authorities continue in to the investigation of the shooting incident of Carbondale, Il. Police Officer Trey Harris on July 31.  The investigation by multiple agencies has led to the arrest of 3 men who are connected to the incident.

According to reports the 3 men were Alex Karcher, 22, Xavier McCray, 22 and Xavier Lewis, 24. All three subjects, who are Kansas residents, were booked into the Saline County, Kansas, Jail with a $1,000,000 bond.

The three men were apprehended during the evening hours of August 7, and early morning hours of August 8, by the I-135/I-70 Drug Task Force from Saline County (KS) Sheriff’s Office, Salina (KS) Police Department, McPherson (KS) Police Department, Saline County (KS) Attorney’s Office, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The three men were arrested Saline County, KS for conspiracy to commit capital murder.

The task force investigation team, led by the Illinois State Police, with assistance from the City of Carbondale Police Department and numerous local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, is continuing a comprehensive investigation, and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation in Kansas.

Investigators continue to investigate the original criminal complaint of the shooting of Officer Harris but state that there is a larger investigation ongoing as well. “It’s more than just the shooting investigation. They’re tying it into a much larger criminal investigation,” said Carbondale Sgt. Amber Ronketto on Monday, one week after the investigation began. “I believe there are more people involved in the initial criminal activity than were involved in the shooting of officer Harris.”

The City of Carbondale is offering a $15,000 reward for information which leads to the identity, arrest and conviction of suspects in this incident.

Chief Jeff Grubbs also said Tuesday that so many people have contacted the police department with intent to drop off stuff, or food, the police department is formulating a schedule.
