Carbondale, Il. Officer Shot Suspects at large

Officers investigating shots fired attempted to stop a vehicle involved with the shooting only to be fired upon. One Officer was hit and seriously injured. A manhunt is underway for the suspects

Carbondale, Il. At about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 in the 700 block of North Robert A. Stalls Street officers on patrol heard gunfire and headed toward it. They observed a tan, four door vehicle that drove off.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and were fired upon by at least one occupant of the vehicle. One officer was struck as well as the patrol vehicle. The officers Partner radioed in immediately that there had been shots fired and an officer was down.

Officers did not return fire.

The injured officer was first taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale and then transferred to a St. Louis hospital where he remains in serious condition at last report. The officers name was not released.

Illinois State Police is investigating the shooting with the assistance of the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, and the SIU Department of Public Safety.
