2 San Diego Officers shot, 1 dead 1 critically injured 1suspect in custody

One San Diego police gang unit officer was killed and a second was hospitalized following a shooting late Thursday night during a traffic stop in the Southcrest neighborhood.

At around 11:00 P.M. on Thursday evening Two San Diego Officers radioed in that they were making a traffic stop. Almost immediately after the two officers requested backup.

Responding officers who arrived quickly on the scene found both officers had been shot. One officer was transported by Police car to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, despite efforts by officers at the scene and medical personnel the officer succumbed to his injuries. The officer had a wife and two children.

The second officer was transported by medical services to a hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

A Hispanic male was taken into custody in connection with the shooting after a gunfight in the 3800 block of Boston Avenue according to Chief Shelley Zimmerman.

A second suspect is being sought.

The San Diego Police Department released the following statement on their Facebook page:

It is with a very sad heart that we announce the death of one of our Officers tonight. Pray for his family and loved ones. We still have a second officer in surgery. Please keep him in your prayers.
