Los Angeles, CA. A running gun battle with Police resulted in an officer being wounded and the suspect being killed after officers returned fire. The incident was reported about 11:10 p.m. near the intersection of 111th and Antwerp streets.
“After meeting with injured @LAPDSoutheast Officer, I’m in awe of courage displayed. Expected to make a full recovery and in good spirits,” Police Chief Charlie Beck said on Twitter. “Initial accounts in @LAPDSoutheast suggest that our brave #LAPD officers endured a fierce gun battle requiring unwavering courage.”
Officers were conducting an extra patrol in the Nickerson Gardens Housing Project when they went to disperse a group of people who were described in initial reports as being disruptive, said Lt. Chris Ramirez with the Los Angeles Police Department.
While officers were dispersing the group, “a suspect fled on foot” and officers gave chase, Ramirez said.
Officer Norma Eisenman says the officer was treated at Long Beach Memorial Hospital for a gunshot wound and released early Tuesday.
Eisenman said that during a foot chase, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began firing. The officer returned fire and fatally shot the suspect.
Two persons of interest were detained, LAPD Southeast Division said.
LAPD Southeast Division said officers were dealing with a hostile crowd following the shooting, but wouldn’t comment further.
At one point, the crowd was agitated and began throwing rocks and bottles at police, but no one was injured.
The suspect’s name has not been released, and detectives remained at the scene Tuesday morning as they looked for clues into the shooting.
