Bristol, Tn. Officers responded to shots fired at about 2:20 A.M. on Volunteer Parkway in Bristol.
Vehicle operators were being targeted and Officers responded to the call for gunfire after a woman named Deborah Watts ha d been shot while working at the front desk of a Days Inn.
The shooter who was taken into custody was identified as 37-year-old Lakeem Keon Scott a black male, stated to the Tennessee Bureau of investigation he was disturbed about the Black Lives Matters movement and the killing of Blacks.
All of Scott’s victims were white and included:
Jennifer Rooney ( A Bristol Herald Courier newspaper carrier) : Deceased after being shot driving in her vehicle on Volunteer Parkway.
Deborah Watts: In serious, but stable, condition at Bristol Regional Medical Center after being shot while working at the Days Inn.
David Whitman Davis: Received minor injuries at the scene after being injured by flying glass resulting from the gunfire.
Officer Matthew Cousins: Sustained a superficial wound to the leg. Was subsequently treated and released from BRMC.
Investigators spoke with Scott Friday morning. Agents say “the work to develop a thorough understanding of his motivation for this incident remains central to the ongoing investigative work.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and Bristol Tennessee Police Department are also assisting the TBI with this case.
The TBI stressed “there is currently no public safety threat to the Bristol community. The ongoing investigation indicates the alleged gunman acted alone.”
Scott was stuck by the officers returning fire. He remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition.
Josh Devine, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Public Information Officer, said the officer who was shot was treated at an area hospital and released.
“The TBI, at the request of Second District Attorney General Barry Staubus is working alongside the Bristol, Tennessee Police Department in investigating a series of shooting related crime scenes that resulted in, at this point, one fatality, and four injuries. A Bristol Police Department officer is among the injured. We are working as aggressively, as quickly, and as carefully as possible to gather any and all relevant evidence to determine the exact set of events. Preliminarily, we’ve determined the subject, armed with at least two weapons fired shots at the Days Inn on Volunteer Parkway and several vehicles before being confronted by Bristol, Tennessee Police. During that exchange, the subject fired shots at three responding officers, after which, the officers returned fire, striking the subject, he was injured and taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center, as were the other individuals injured in connection to this incident.”
