3 Georgia State Troopers injured, 1 suspect shot

A suspect was shot and killed after fleeing a DWI checkpoint and engaging in an altercation that resulted in the injury of 3 Georgia State Police Officers

At around 9:00 P.M.  “Officers of Georgia State Patrol, Hall County Sheriff’s Department and Gainesville Police Department were conducting a rolling thunder operation with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, A vehicle fled the road scene at Georgia 53, just south of I-985.” according to Capt. Mark Perry with Georgia State Patrol during a press conference.

Troopers chased the suspect vehicle about ¾ of a mile after it had made an illegal U-Turn to avoid the checkpoint. Captain Perry said: “Metal crunched and some wrecks happened and there was some back-and-forth between the violator and the troopers. There was a crash outside of Industrial Boulevard and two males got out of the Ford Explorer they had been pursuing and a foot pursuit ensued.”

After an “Intense struggle” after the Trooper was not able to subdue the suspect, the trooper discharged his weapon which resulted in the suspect being shot and ultimately died.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Office of Professional Standards have been called in to investigate.

All three injured officers were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
