At 8 a.m. on Monday, two Hardeeville Police officers and a Jasper County Sheriff‘s deputy responded to an armed robbery at the Dollar General on Whyte Hardee Boulevard for a report by a citizen of a robbery in progress.
Police say the suspect had taken the store clerk hostage. The clerk tried to break away from the suspect, and police say that’s when a shootout began between the suspect and law enforcement.
Jasper County deputy Dan Morgan who has been with the department for approximately 15 years was shot in the foot during the shootout.
The suspect is believed to be dead after being transported to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center, Woodward said. However, the suspect has not been identified.
While the store clerk who was held hostage, was not injured during the shooting between the officers and the suspect. Woodward said she was “shaken up and was talking to the victim’s advocate before giving a statement to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division who will be handling the investigation.”
“We’re lucky that a citizen saw the gunman and reported it. We always tell our business clerks to let them have whatever they want and not fight back,” Chief Sam Woodward of the Hardeeville Police Department said. “And we will continue to share that message.”
Investigators are still trying to figure out how many shots were fired, how Morgan was hurt and which officers fired their weapons, Singleton said. The State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate the suspect’s death.
