Over 1,000 show up for Ride to benefit Harris Co. Deputy who was shot in face

More than 1,000 people rode their motorcycles Newnan to Columbus for Deputy Jamie White’s “back the blue” benefit ride. Deputy White was shot in the face during a routine traffic stop in May of this year.

 

A few short weeks ago Deputy Jamie White of the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office was shot in the face during a “routine traffic stop”. In that short period of time a fundraiser ride was set up for him that delivered over 1,000 supporters.

A GoFundMe Page was set up to assist the Deputies family as he is convalescing that had over 2,400 shares. The page Back the Blue SD18- White stated:

On May 28, 2016 Harris County Deputy Jamie White conducted a traffic stop on I-185 for speeding. After speaking with the driver for several minutes, the vehicle’s driver shot Deputy White in the face with a small caliber pistol. The vehicle then fled the scene, and Deputy White was left injured on the side of the highway. After first responders arrived, Deputy White was transported to the Medical Center in Columbus, GA. Jamie is not expected to regain sight in his left eye.

Jamie and his wife Tami are both first reponders, sharing their talent, time, and energy with those in our community through their work in law enforcement and as a Paramedic.  As they and their children recover from this senseless act of violence, it is time now for our community to support this family.

People responded with donations totaling over $21,000 so far to help the Deputy and his family.

The Ride for Deputy White was scheduled for June 18; just 3 short weeks after the Deputy had been shot in the face as we reported. Fees were charged at $20 per bike, $5 per bike passenger and $25 per vehicle to help the injured Law Enforcement Officer.

Sheriff John T. Darr who is the Muscogee County Sheriff said of the event:

I am so proud of the number of people who came to show their support for the Back the Blue Benefit Ride for Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Jamie White. We are a strong and united community. The entire Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office stands with you, Deputy White.

One rider in the event told local news WRBL: “I rode with large groups before, but this was one of the largest. We believe that there were a little over 1,200 bikes and probably close to 80 vehicles. So we believe it was one of the largest bike rides that we’ve had in a long time,”
