Cicero, NY Police Department gets needed support from The Spirit of Blue

The Spirit of Blue, a non-profit organization that supports Police Agencies based on need that raises funds through gifts from the public has given the Cicero Police Department much needed Rifles to protect the citizens and Officers of the area in the event of an emergency.

Most small Police Departments have financial problems and equipment shortages. While protecting and serving the citizens of each community is essential, it requires more than a smile and good attitude, it requires equipment at times. That is where groups like “The Spirit of Blue” become nothing short of true real life savers.

The Cicero Police Department is a Police Department like many others in the United States, with officers that are highly trained in modern Police doctrine, they care very much about the public that they serve. They are however faced with budget shortfalls that do not allow them to have equipment that many departments consider necessary for worst case scenarios.

Some of that problem has now been reduced thanks to The Spirit of Blue, their generous grant of three new rifles and accessories that were desperately needed.  The grant that was valued at $9,065.43 consisted of 3 new AR-15 rifles and accessories that will now give the Officers a Patrol Rifle Program that they did not have before.

Because of this generous gift the officers can now respond to situations that have been plaguing our society, causing deadly encounters to officers and citizens alike for decades where criminals have outmatched law enforcement in firepower.

It is this type of equipment that can save lives by having it available for deployment if it becomes necessary in a worst case scenario both quickly and responsibly.

Cicero Police Chief Joe Snell told WSYR “We also know, if something should happen, God forbid, Cicero will probably be the first agency on the scene. We have a responsibility to make sure we go in there and stop the threat from occurring,”

“Based on the fact that they had no patrol rifle program at all, we wanted to step in and start that for them, because of the importance and safety of their officers,” said Ryan Smith of Spirit of Blue.

“It’s heartbreaking to know that if we were faced in the past, with a situation like that (mass shootings), we would not be prepared, out gunned to say the least, now it levels the playing field a bit,” said Sgt. Jim Snell.

Considering the recent mass shooting in Orlando, it seems only prudent that Officers have the best equipment offered to them as readily available as can be.

In a press release Chief Joseph Snell of the Cicero Police Department commented “These rifles will be a great asset to the Department and the community. It is important that we are prepared to respond to critical incidents with the proper equipment,” “Having the proper equipment and resources provides a higher level of safety for our Officers and the residents of Cicero.”

“At the most basic level a rifle is a tool, and these are tools that any modern law enforcement agency must have to protect its officers and the residents they serve,” explained Ryan T. Smith, Executive Director of the Spirit of Blue Foundation. “We are pleased to be able provide these tools to the Cicero Police Department and we are grateful to our many safety grant sponsors who donated their great products to make this grant possible.”

The CQB16 rifles were generously donated by premier rifle manufacturer LMT Defense. Accessories to the weapons were donated by their respective manufacturers.

From the press release of The Spirit Of Blue Foundation: Statistics preliminarily released by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund show that 44 law enforcement officers have already lost their lives in 2016, a decrease of 8% so far from the prior year. But 20 of those deaths were firearm related, a 25% increase over the same period in 2015. The reality of these statistics, and the increasing number of underfunded law enforcement agencies across the country, fuel the Spirit of Blue safety grant initiative.

The Spirit of Blue Foundation actively encourages the public at large to honor and appreciate law enforcement officers who serve to protect our communities. By supporting the Spirit of Blue Foundation, the public can make an impact in the lives of law enforcement officers every day.
