Columbia S.C. P.D. Officer Pete Conklin Needs Assistance

Police Officer Pete Conklin was injured by a vehicle that struck him as he was assisting a motorist.

Columbia, S.C. Police Officer Pete Conklin is recovering from serious injuries in an intensive care unit after being injured in a collision on Interstate 126 late Tuesday afternoon. 

Conklin, a five-year veteran of the agency who’s assigned to the Metro Region’s Community Response Team, continues to recover in the intensive care unit.

Lance Corporal David Jones says Conklin was helping a driver whose car had broken down in the far right lane near the Broad River Road Bridge when he was struck by a car around 6 p.m. Conklin was struck by a 2014 Honda Civic, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said late Tuesday night.

“There was also a tow truck that was there with lights flashing,” Jones said.

The person in the vehicle that struck Conklin was also taken to the hospital for what are described as minor injuries.

Officer Pete Conklin continues to recover in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital. He’s been surrounded by immediate relatives and his CPD family throughout the day.

May 24 at 9:39pm · OFFICER INJURED UPDATE:

Police Chief Skip Holbrook appreciates all of the support and prayers for the on-duty Officer who was hit and injured by a vehicle on I-126 earlier this evening.

Officer Pete Conklin is out of surgery after being treated for injuries sustained during the incident; the most serious wounds are to his arm. Officer Conklin continues to recover in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

Officer Conklin is a 5-year veteran of the Columbia Police Department and is currently assigned to the Metro Region’s Community Response Team.

CPD Officers were initially responding to a collision and a separate disabled motorist incident when Officer Conklin was struck.

The SC Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
