Appleton, WI. Police Officer and Bystander Shot, Suspect Dead

Just after 10:30 Friday night, the Appleton Police Department responded to two separate retail thefts on the east side of the city. Just after midnight Saturday morning, an officer on patrol recognized the suspect from the retail theft description, who was walking southbound on Kensington Drive in Appleton.

An Appleton Police Department officer is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound after an incident in Appleton early this morning. 
The series of incidents began at approximately 10:37 P.M., 05/27/16, with a reported theft of merchandise from the Mobil Gas Station, 2811 E. Newberry Street. The gas station employee provided a detailed suspect description and the suspect fled the store on foot. At approximately 12:04 A.M., 05/28/16, a similarly-described suspect stole merchandise in the same manner from the MotoMart Gas Station, 320 S. Kensington Drive, and again fled on foot.
An Appleton Police Department officer spotted a man matching the suspect description at approximately 12:16 A.M. on Kensington Drive near Kensington Court. The suspect resisted arrest and a physical struggle took place in the 900 block of S. Kensington Drive. During the struggle, the officer was shot. Two men in a passing car stopped at the scene and exited the car to help the officer. One of the bystanders was shot by the suspect and the suspect, a 23-year old Appleton man, died of a gunshot wound at the scene.
The Green Bay Police Department is investigating this incident at the request of the Appleton Police Department. More information will be released later in the day on Saturday, May 28.
