2 LAPD officers wounded, suspect killed in exchange of gunfire

The incident began when officers responded to reports of shots fired near 7th and Lorena streets at about 8:30 p.m., LAPD officials said.

A spokesman for the L.A.P.D. Sgt. Frank Preciado stated that officers from the gang unit responded to a shots fired call near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets and tried to make a pedestrian stop. 

That when they tried to stop the pedestrian the suspect ran from them and the two officers gave chase. At some point the suspect, described only as a male, turned and produced a firearm and fired upon the officers who returned fire.

One officer was shot and wounded in the shoulder, the suspect was also struck. A witness stated that he heard about 6 – 8 rounds of gunfire and thought it was fireworks.

The incident happened near the 3400 block of Lee Street, near the intersection of 7th and Lorena streets.

The alleged gang member who shot the officer was killed, according to media reports. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The officer who was shot was rushed to the hospital in a patrol car; the second officer suffered a back strain and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

The officer who had been shot was in the hospital and was in attendance with his wife and baby daughter.

Both officers were wearing body cameras but the footage has not been viewed yet.
