The Incident that left a Kansas City Police Officer Dead today started out with a suspicious persons call at about 12:17 P.M. at the Hollywood Casino. Officers spotted Curtis Ayers, 28, of Tonganoxie, Kansas and attempted to question him near the Kansas Speedway.
The suspect was confronted by a Detective and ran into a field where he shot the Detective at least twice. The Detective was taken to KU Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Ayers then stole the Detectives cruiser and fled the scene. Ayers left the detective’s car, then carjacked a vehicle with two children inside. That vehicle later was found in nearby Basehor, and the children were found unharmed.
Ayers was eventually spotted in another vehicle and was given chase by Law Enforcement Officers. He was involved in a motor vehicle accident and the chase ended. Gun fire was exchanged with Officers, but no other officers were injured during the exchange.
The suspect was believed to be injured but in stable condition.
The Kansas City Kansas Police Department made the following statement
Today at approximately 1217 hours a call was put out regarding a suspicious person near the Hollywood Casino. Officers responded to the call. When officers made contact with the suspicious party he fled the scene on foot. Several officers gave chase. A Detective who was in the area went to assist the officers at which time the suspect opened fire, striking the detective several times. The suspect then fled in the detective’s vehicle. The Detective was taken to KU Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
