The incident started just before 11:00 P.M. when a Mahomet Police officer pulled over Darcy “Clint” Pendelton, 34, for a minor traffic violation in the . The suspect was released and for an unknown reason the officer then pulled him over again around the 600 block of South Vine Street a few minutes later.
At some point the Officer and Pendelton began to fight. The officer deployed his taser without any effect. Pendelton produced a handgun and fired at the officer and the officer returned fire with his service weapon.
Pendelton then allegedly ran into a home and grabbed a rifle firing again, before leaving in a pick up truck. Pendelton’s truck was later found near the Riverbend Forest Preserve.
Officers responded to the scene and Pendelton fled. The unnamed officer who had confronted him was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for his injuries where he was treated for at least one gunshot wound and released at about 6:00 A.M.
Pendelton is now believed to be in a stolen a white, two-door, GMC 2500 pick-up truck, the number “30070” is painted on the vehicle which he stole from a nearby business.
Police Chief Mike Metzler made the following comments to the press regarding the incident: “After he was released from the stop with warnings, he did something that caused the (officer who was later shot) to re-engage with him,”
“At some point when he engaged with (the officer), he (Pendleton) was out on foot. Something precipitated a physical confrontation between Pendleton and our officer. Our officer was struck in the head. At some point during this physical struggle, the officer deployed his taser with no apparent effect.”
“At some point, the suspect produced a pistol and began firing on the officer,” “Our officer returned fired and we believe the suspect was struck. He retreated into a residence in the 500 block of South Vine and came back out with a long rifle,” “The guy comes out with the long gun and begins to fire. He jumps in the truck and rams the officer’s car and leaves the area.”
Several rounds of gunfire were exchanged by both suspect and officer. A search of the residence that the suspect entered to retrieve the long gun revealed blood stains, confirming the theory that the suspect had been struck with one of the rounds at minimum.
A Champaign County judge has issued a warrant for Pendletons arrest with bail being set at $5 million.
A handgun has been retrieved that was used to shoot the officer at the original scene.
