McCurtain County Sheriff Office Deputy Shot attempting to arrest Hit and Run Driver

A Deputy Sheriff assisting a Game Warden in the arrest of a Hit and Run driver accused of vehicular assault was shot while attempting to arrest the suspect at his home.

At about 3:45 p.m. Friday just north of Broken Bow Captain Mike Virgin of the Department of Wildlife Conservation and McCurtain County sheriff’s Deputy Corey Sharrock went to the residence of a hit and run driver to arrest him.

Upon locating the vehicle used in the hit and run and the driver at the residence the driver fled into the house and Virgin ran after him. The driver Charles Brown retrieved a rifle from within the residence. Deputy Sharrock fired upon Brown and struck him in the elbow.

Brown returned fire and struck the Deputy in his pelvis below his ballistic vest. Brown surrendered to Sheriff’s deputies shortly after more units arrived on the scene.

Sharrock was flown to Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas, where he underwent surgery Friday evening. He is currently stable.

Brown was taken a Tulsa area hospital for treatment and is in custody.

The matter is under investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.
