K9 Riggs Locates Missing Elderly Man in Northampton

On Wednesday night just before midnight, Northampton Police Department requested K9 assistance in searching for an elderly man that went missing from an assisted living facility. Tpr. Sean Kenney and K9 Riggs responded to assist and learned that the man had not been seen for approximately five hours.

After speaking with Northampton officers, Tpr. Kenney retrieved a scent article and attempted a track from an open door located at the facility. Riggs acquired a scent and tracked away from the facility towards the wood line. Riggs then tracked along a trail into the woods, through an abandoned camp and through heavy brush. While tracking, Tpr. Kenney heard a faint cry for help and continued to follow Riggs until they came upon the man lying on the ground unable to move. The team tracked over a mile into the woods. The man had various cuts and bruises and was shivering. The Northampton officer with the team was able to guide fire and rescue into the woods while they covered and comforted the injured man, attempting to keep him warm. Northampton Fire then transported him to the hospital.

Without Riggs locating the man, the outcome could have been very different. Nice work!
