The officer was assigned to the East Metro Gang Enforcement Team when he and his partner, a Gresham Police Officer, responded to reports of a motor vehicle accident just before 11 p.m..
They arrived, at Southeast 188 and Burnside and found a GMC Envoy crashed into a fence a male driver was running from the scene. Officers chased him to the 18900 block of Northeast Couch Lane.
“A radio call indicating they located the suspect was quickly followed by ‘shots fired’ and ‘officer hit,’” the Gresham Police Department said in a prepared statement. The lone suspect, a man, is in custody, the spokesman said.
Both suspect and officer who were hit with gunfire were taken to separate hospitals. The officer was taken to a trauma hospital in Portland.
Both suspect and officer are expected to survive.
There were no other suspects being searched for. The name of the officer or his condition was not released at this time.
There were no further details of the incident or type of weapon used regarding the incident given. The investigation is continuing. All officers directly involved in the incident have been placed on leave during the initial phases of the investigation. Police said that is a standard procedure.
