A Florence, AL. police officer was shot early this morning and the suspect is dead.

The officer was shot in the face just after midnight Sunday at Cox Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Road. No motive was immediately available. The male suspect approached the officer at an intersection before the suspect fired shots at the officer.

Authorities said about 30 minutes later, Florence Police found a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the initial shooting. Officers said a short car chase ended in the parking lot of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ. Officers at the scene said they heard a single gunshot from inside the vehicle before finding the driver dead.

Berry was flown to Huntsville Hospital. The officer was shot in the face, authorities said, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Officer Brian Berry was treated and released after the incident from the hospital. The suspect in the shooting of the officer died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, authorities said. The suspect’s identity has not been released.

After Berry was shot, police began looking for a black SUV. A vehicle matching the description was spotted just before 1 a.m. on Wright Drive and a short chase with officers ensued, according to reports.

The suspect drove east on Wright Drive, crossed Chisholm Road and drove straight into the parking lot of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ, north of Cox Creek Parkway. The suspect’s vehicle stopped after hitting a trailer containing camping equipment and other items belonging to a Boy Scout troop sponsored by the church.

According to reports, as police approached, the suspect apparently shot himself.

Florence Police have requested the assistance of the State Bureau of Investigation regarding an officer involved shooting that happened this morning at approximately 12:10am at the intersection of Cox Creek and Cloverdale Rd. The Florence Officer was shot in the face and has been transported to Huntsville Hospital. The officer was able to return fire, but the suspect managed to flee the scene. Our officer is alert and talking.

Approximately 30 minutes after the initial shooting, officers located a vehicle matching the suspect’s vehicle description. A short pursuit ensued and ended in the parking lot of Chisholm Hills Church of Christ. Approaching officers heard a single gun shot from the vehicle. No officer fired their weapon at this second scene. The suspect was subsequently discovered to be deceased. The SBI has taken over the investigation. Names will be released after all appropriate notifications have been made.
