On March 19, 2016 McKenzie Amanda Grace Catron, a University of Arkansas student, was killed in a crash in Dothan, Alabama, while on a spring break trip last weekend. In the vehicle traveling with her was her friend Jessica and beloved dog Kai.
McKenzie sadly died from her injuries and Jessica is suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury, along with a broken Back and Pelvis. The dog, frightened from the accident ran.
The community rallied, Police officers, firemen and, eventually, hundreds of local volunteers combed the area looking for Kai, Catron’s pit bull in order to reunite the animal with McKenzie’s family. One of those touched by Kai’s story was Lori Woodham, who helped spread the word on social media. Her push started the “Help Find Kai” Facebook page.
In short order the animal was found by volunteers who had mobilized using social media to track and locate the dog. After Kai was located unharmed, Kai was taken to an area vet to be checked out. Other than fatigue and being dehydrated, Kai was given a clean bill of health.
Sgt. Whaley and his wife Ashley took up the task of driving 12 hours to reunite Kai with her family. “I felt that God impressing on me that we needed to make this trip,” said Sgt. Whaley of the Dothan Police Department.
The family posted words of thanks for the return of Kai stating:
