Officers responded to the 300 block of Neola St. to investigate a burglary where a stolen car had been found at the location. The residence should have been vacant at the time however it was learned that someone was inside who did not belong there.
A suspect emerged from the home and when Officers attempted to detain him the suspect produced a handgun and fired upon officers. One officer was hit and other officers returned fire.
The Officer that was hit suffered life threatening injuries. The officer was transported to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields and then air lifted to Christ Medical Center.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The Officer has been identified as Tim Jones according to Park Forest Mayor John Osternburg. Osternburg said Jones has been with the department for about a year, and comes from a line of family police officers.
