On Thursday March 10, 2016 Detective Sgt. Eddie Lawson was shot twice while attempting to serve a warrant stemming from a domestic dispute on Ben J. Wyatt III, 28, of Franklin.
When The Sgt. attempted to make the arrest Wyatt opened fire on the Sgt. striking him in the pelvis and femur. Sgt. Lawson returned fire on Wyatt and struck him in the upper left arm then radioed in his situation as Wyatt fled on foot.
Help raced in from several agencies in every direction. Officers set up a perimeter and found Wyatt about three blocks from the site where the shooting took place. He was taken into custody and transported to a local area hospital for treatment of his wounds and charged with attempted murder and fourth-degree assault ( for the domestic violence), menacing and third-degree terroristic threatening.
Sgt. Lawson was rushed to another medical facility with much more life threatening wounds having been hit in the femur. Interstate roadways were shut down as a formation of Patrol cars and Department of Transportation vehicles blocked traffic at on ramps to ensure less vehicles on the road for quicker travel.
TDOT incident manager Emerson Boguskie told WKRN “This had to be quick. In these situations, they don’t fool around they move on down the road,” “you can equate this to something like a presidential visit or something”
