On February 12, 2016 The Las Vegas Police Department K-9 Team Of Sgt. Eric Kerns and his K-9 “Nicky” engaged a suspect after a 12 hour stand off at the Maryland Parkway apartments where SWAT had been called to. Neighbors had reported to Police hearing 2-4 gunshots and glass breaking in a residence demanding a Police presence.
13Action News reported that they were told a man was shouting “help me!” and that is what prompted neighbors to call for Police.
When Police arrived they attempted to make contact with residents to no avail. A stand off began that lasted 12 hours with a Police negotiator attempting to get the subject to surrender himself to authorities.
Approximately 3 hours later the K-9 team of Eric Kerns and his K-9 “Nicky” were deployed into the residence where K-9 Nickey engaged the suspect who failed to surrender.
K-9 Nickey was stabbed several times in his head while attempting to take the subject to the ground and hold him for his partner Sgt. Kerns to arrest. K-9 Nickey although severely injured accomplished his task in subduing the suspect who was placed under arrest.
The suspect was bitten several times during the altercation.
The K-9 was taken to a vet for emergency surgery and is now home after spending a night in the hospital resting comfortably.
