February 11, 2106 A Riverdale, Ga. Police Officer and 15-year veteran of the force died after he was shot while attempting to serve a no knock warrant at an apartment complex on Church Street.
The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. at the Villages on the River complex where Riverdale police were assisting Clayton County police on a narcotics investigation.
The Officer who has not been named yet was not wearing a ballistic vest a he was part of the command staff according to reports. The Officer was struck twice in a hail of gunfire. Once in the arm and once in the chest.
It has been learned that the Officer was a 15 year veteran of the Department but his name is being withheld at this time.
He was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale in critical condition where he underwent surgery but expired due to his injuries.
Clayton County Police Chief Michael Register said this “is a loss for everybody.”
The suspect was also shot by Clayton Police Officers and taken to Atlanta Medical Center. The suspect who ran from the house and attacked the Officers is reported to be in critical condition at this time.
“Think about the loss of a family member. That’s how we’ll handle it,” Riverdale Police Chief Todd Spivey said of the officer’s death.
CBS46’s Dante Renzulli interviewed a witness who said the suspect “came out of the house like Rambo” and wouldn’t give up.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of the investigation.
