February 4, 2016 Shelbyville, Ky. On Friday Shelbyville Police Officer Toby Lewis had finished his shift for the day but he had not finished protecting and serving.
The officer had taken a different way home than he normally did and this time he happened to pass by a creek. Something caught his eye, it was a car that had been overturned in the creek and he immediately stopped.
After calling the dispatchers to let them know that he had seen a vehicle there and he was going to investigate it, he rushed into the creek to hear the screams for help. Lewis then saw bloody fingers reaching through the partially opened sun roof reaching toward him for help.
He ripped the sunroof open and climbed in the car finding 17 year old Tayler Wilson still seat belted in the vehicle. The girl was bleeding from a severe cut on her head and was in danger of drowning.
Officer Lewis held her in his arms supporting her until other rescuers arrived. Soon the jaws of life were used to extricate the girl from her vehicle.
The young lady Tayler Wilson who was pulled from the wreckage wrote on her facebook page two entries as follows:
Blessed I’ve had people here with me through all of this. My parents, grandparents, brother, my bestfriends, and boyfriend. Also thank all of you for the prayers.a big thank you to the cop I now know their name, Toby Lewis for finding and saving me, along with the rest of the officers, emt, and fire dpt. I don’t wanna think about what would’ve happened without all of you. I’m still in the hospital for a while, with a head full of staples and stitches, bruised lungs, broken ribs, ligaments torn in my shoulder with numerous cuts, along with glass cuts throughout my body. Sadly, my car is destroyed, not sure if it was pulled out of the creek yet or not. Luckily my stuff is being recovered from it. Idk what I’d do Without these people by my side I love you all.
and again she wrote:
Thank you to everyone for all the prayers, and kind words. Things are still pretty rough, but I’m blessed to still be here. Words can’t describe how grateful I am to God for helping me through all of this, and for the all the people that saved me friday night. As for Toby, I do see him as a hero. I know he doesn’t see himself as one, but you found me, and saved my life. To me and my family you truly are a hero. I can’t say thank you enough.
