Suffolk County Highway Patrol Officer protects citizens in head on crash with drunk driver

January 28, 2016 Suffolk County, N.Y. Suffolk County Highway Patrol Officer Joseph Verdi responded to eastbound Sunrise Highway following a 911 call regarding a vehicle traveling the wrong way according to reports.The Officer saw the van and activated his emergency lighting to warn other drivers of impending danger of the vehicle as he tried to slow them down.

Verdi’s vehicle was struck head on by the 2012 Ford Van of the initial 911 complaint, driven by Steven Hennessy who was uninjured in the collision. He was later charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree and Reckless Assault 3rd Degree.

Officer Verdi was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
