January 21, 2016 Fairfax County, Virginia Police Public Information Office Released the following information recognizing Officer Chris Mamalis and his heroic efforts in saving the life of a child.
This afternoon while on his way to work at the Mount Vernon District police station, PFC Chris Mamalis, saw a group of neighborhood children who appeared to be dragging another child. The children, recognizing PFC Mamalis as one of their neighbors and a police officer, flagged him down. PFC Mamalis learned that the 9-year-old boy had fallen through the ice at a nearby creek and his clothing was totally wet and beginning to freeze. The child was nearly unconscious and unresponsive. Recognizing the child was likely suffering from exposure, PFC Mamalis placed the child in his vehicle, removed the child’s outer, wet clothing and put some of his own dry clothes on the child. He turned up the heat in his vehicle and called for rescue. Rescue responded and transported the child to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Once rescue cleared PFC Mamalis reported for duty.
