January 1, 2015 Savannah-Chatham, Ga. The WBL along with many other news outlets, fan pages and media sources posted a photo and video‘s of f Sgt. John Cain of the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department help a fallen runner cross the finish line at the Rock n’ Roll Marathon in Savannah on November 8, 2015. Now this Officer is in desperate need of help.
According to the Sgt.’s daughter who’s name is Shania Cain, the Sgt. was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just before Christmas of this year. Pancreatic cancer has a very poor prognosis and it’s a leading cause of cancer death according to the Mayo Clinic.
The Sgt. has been referred to Emory university for surgery on his pancreas but insurance will only pay a small portion, because it because it is considered out of network. The family is asking for financial support at this time to assist with the overwhelming medical bills which may reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Sgt. Cain told WTOC “That drive that he had is the same drive that I have now, and my heroes are my family that are helping me to stay in the fight, to finish this race and continue this and not give up,” said Sgt. Cain. “I can feel myself getting weaker and weaker every day. As I get closer to that finish line, I know that there will be people that come and pick me up and help me cross that finish line. I will be the winner when it comes down to it.”
“His face being sent worldwide was great, but he is a hero every day. That is what he does, every day,” said Shania Cain, daughter. “The fact that he is here gives me the motivation to keep going. As long as he is here, I have motivation to go where I want to go.”
