Utica, N.Y. Police Officer Thomas Lindsey’s ultimate sacrifice honored with the spirit of giving

On April 12, 2007 Utica Police Officer Thomas Lindsey was killed during a routine traffic stop by a man who walked up upon him during the stop. Since that time the 5 year veteran has been remembered in the most positive of ways including an annual “Shop with a cop” program sponsored in part by The Thomas Lindsey Foundation and Target Stores to help underprivileged children.

This year Officers from eight different Local Police Departments assisted in the annual event and shopped with 125 children on December 5th. Each child was given $100.00 to spend as they saw fit however perhaps not surprisingly most did not spend on themselves.

WKTV reported that Utica Police Sgt. James Laurey who is also a board member of the Thomas Lindsey Foundation  “99% of them buy for their family, brothers and sisters, they never buy for themselves and it pulls on your heart strings and it just makes you feel good about what you’re doing, the service you’re providing for them.”

Utica Police Sgt. Greg Facciolo said of the day “Our goal is to break down that barrier between police officers and the children and let them know we’re not just the cop on the street, we’re also friends of theirs too.”

From the Thomas Lindsey Foundation web site’s page:

The Christmas season can be difficult on many families here in Central New York, and members of the Thomas Lindsey Foundation, local police officers and their friends and family, raise money all year round to give  $100 gift cards to as many kids as they can, so the children can buy something for themselves or their family members.

Tom Lindsey loved children, and his colleagues know he would have loved to see the smiles on the faces of the kids and their parents. To most of them, this is the only gift any will receive during the holidays.

The Thomas M. Lindsey foundation asks area schools and community centers to give them names and addresses of children in need, and the Foundation tries to help as many as possible. If you know of a child you would like to nominate, please fill out our nomination form.

Money for the Shop with a Cop program is raised through the Brothers Forever Ride and The Thomas M. Lindsey Memorial Golf Tournament.
