November 6, 2015 While on Patrol Officer Ashley Catatao stopped Robin Sutherland for speeding. Robin was already having a very bad day, she was going to see her 90 year old mother who was going into hospice care. While Robin may have thought she had remained collected Ashley was able to empathize with the emotional strain and the difficult time that she was having with the circumstances during the stop.
As WABC reported Robin said “And I thought I kept it together until I was pulled over,” however she may not have hidden her distress as well as she thought.
During the time that the Officer was running her information and the quiet time of her sitting in her car she became rather emotional when everything caught up with her. She hadn’t had a ticket since the 1980’s and the imminent passing of her loved one was emotional.
Catatao Let her off with a warning but later felt that she had wanted to offer more comfort to Robin for the suffering that she was going through at the time so she sent her a bouquet of flowers. She stated: “And I felt bad that I couldn’t just sit with her and talk with her, give her a hug,” the officer said. “After she left I thought about it, it didn’t leave me. So I thought I would do something nice and send her some flowers and put a smile on her face.”
Robin’s message to Officer Catatao: “I can’t imagine anybody having done that for me. Knowing you did, on such a tough day for me is so appreciated. You rock.”
The card that accompanied the flowers read: “I hope you find comfort that she lived a long life and will continue to live in your heart and your memories. Signed the officer who pulled you over this morning.”
The flowers were brought to the room where Sutherlands mother is now so that they can be shared in the manner that they were sent, to bring comfort.
