October 21, 2015 Cedar Park, Tx. When Officer Justin Gower pulled a man who was driving a truck over for an expired registration and malfunctioning light the driver probably thought his already difficult situation was about to get worse. The man has been struggling just to make ends meet and has been working to keep his children fed while living in his car. The man had just enough money to recently move the family to a motel. Gower remembered hearing about the man from another Officer and recognized the man as soon as he pulled him over.
He also saw another very problematic situation, a 1-year-old, 3-year-old, and 4-year-old little girls weren’t in car seats. The Officer quickly decided to call Officer Hawkins to try and make a difference.
Rather than issue summonses to the man which would only further burden his financial situation and hurt the children in the long run the two officers decided that they would pay it forward and help the family out. “Giving him three tickets, it wasn’t going to do any good,” said Gower. “Those kids were still going to have to be driven somewhere, somehow with no car seats.” “We just kind of stepped off to the side and said we need to kind of do the right thing and get these people some car seats,” Hawkins told KVUE
Officers Gower and Hawkins decided that they should do what they could immediately to help the kids and family by putting money together between the two of them and hatched a plan. Officer Gower kept the motorist talking while Officer Hawkins left and went to a local Wal-Mart.
Hawkins told KVUE “I recognized some of the management staff and told them immediately what I wanted to do. She walked back with me and helped me. We chose the age appropriate car seats and color coded them,”
Apparently the manager was very happy to help and appreciated what the Officers were trying to do for the family and gave them a small discount on the car seats bringing the total to about $145.00.
Hawkins returned to where Gower still had the driver pulled over and the three men installed the car seats for the three children.
While the man declined to be interviewed on camera he did state “It was nothing short of a miracle. It was something that was really needed. The officers have been a blessing.”
