October 2, 2015 Ashley Calhoun who is now 14 years old has been battling one form of cancer or another since the age of 7. A survivor at heart the child has beaten the disease back and sent it into remission only to have it come back in another form. Further complicating matters she lives with her father who is unemployed and three siblings. Things are undoubtedly very difficult around her home. Of course heroes do exist like Officer Sarah Suerth of the Brooklyn Park Police Department who make sure not every day is as much a struggle as the last.
On Ashley’s birthday she woke up to the sound of sirens from no less than six Police cars coming down her street that had been partially blocked off. Waking up and looking out her window must have come as quite a shock to her as she saw them pulling p in front of her home as the public announcement systems on the Patrol car wailed a “Happy Birthday” song.
Officers exited their vehicles with balloons and gifts and walked up her driveway as she came out to greet them and they handed her with a small treat as well. Ashley was given a gift card to go shopping with to buy whatever she wanted from the Officers and was given a round of birthday hugs and well wishes.
Officer Suerth had learned of Ashleys problems and arranged for this event. Ashley was genuinely happy for the attention and her father Jay was equally happy stating “It makes us forget everything, it makes us .. say what a community!”
Fox9 covered the story and has a complete video of the event and reporting.
