Prince George County, Md. Corporal Che’ Atkinson gives assistance to mother and child.

When domestic abuse occurs people turn  to the Police. In turn many displaced family members then turn to other members of family for assistance. But what if they can’t help or get there quick enough? Normally, the people looking for help are stuck. Unless there is someone who is really willing to go out of their way and be a good Samaritan. Thankfully it happened Thursday August 27, 2015 for one mother and her One year old daughter.

After being a Police Officer for years you see many things and meet many people in all kinds of circumstances. You understand that you can not possibly help everyone with your own resources but sometimes a little compassion makes all the difference in the world and can last a lifetime.

On Wednesday August 26, 2015 a woman went to the District 1 Station in Hyattsville where Corporal Che’ Atkinson noticed her sitting with her bags and one year old daughter at about 8:00 A.M.. He spoke with her and learned that she had been a victim of domestic abuse, having no where to go she went tot he Police Station.

He gathered more information from her and then reached out to local resources for immediate support for the woman and then contacted a distant relative to come and pick the woman and child up. Believing that he had helped the now homeless woman and child he went about his regular duties.

On Thursday August 27, 2015 Corporal Atkinson saw the same woman sitting in the Stations lobby still waiting for assistance.  Inquiring what had happened he found out that it would not be until Friday August 28 that she would be picked up and that she nor the child had eaten in days. The two were completely destitute and no one had helped them in anyway.

Atkinson decided to cut the red tape with an axe! He found a child restraint for his patrol car and took the mother and child to a Hotel where they could both rest comfortably while waiting for their family member to pick them up paying for the expense out of his own pocket. He then brought them food and drinks again paying for the expense out of his own pocket.

Corporal Che’ Atkinson showed compassion for a woman and her child in their time of need. When resources failed he used his own. Prince George’s County, Md. is lucky to have such an Officer who cares so much about the people he protects and serves.

Little media attention was given to this event, however the Prince George’s County Police Department did post something on their Facebook timeline about it showing photos of Corporal Atkinson loading his Patrol car with the bags of the mother and daughter.
